Montreal swimming pools a 'danger to the public'

A third of Montreal's public outdoor swimming pools have been ordered to close after a study said high pollution levels posed a serious danger to the public.

The study, commissioned by the Journal de Montréal newspaper, revealed traces of fecal bacteria and included high levels of E. coli, C. difficile and legionella.

The bacteria can cause diarrhea, nausea, eye and skin irritations and respiratory problems.

The study, which analyzed three samples of water from each of the city's 73 pools during July and August, said a third of Montreal's public outdoor swimming pools failed the pollution test and should be closed down.

Another third of the pools didn't meet accepted standards.

Montréal has "lost control" of the quality of the city's swimming pools, prompting a situation that is "dangerous" to public health, the Journal reported.

Drasco Pekovic, author of the 200-page study, said microbial contamination was "a real danger causing vomiting, diarrhea and skin diseases."

The swimming pools should be closed until Montreal adopts a more rigorous system of hygiene control, Pekovic added.

Mark Branch, of the Boys and Girls Club of LaSalle, Que., told CTV News he was "shocked" when he read details of the survey.

"We immediately made sure the kids weren't swimming anymore," Branch said. "We were shocked, very shocked."

Following publication of the report Monday, Montreal Mayor Gerald Tremblay ordered the immediate closure of all swimming pools that failed the lab tests.

"We have to find out why we're in a situation like this," said Tremblay, after ordering further tests to be conducted on the pools.

Nothing was more important than public health and security, Tremblay added.

Montreal's health department said it was not aware that anyone had become ill as a result of the water quality.

"Over the course of the last weeks and months, we haven't received information about infections related to swimming in Montreal pools,'' Blaise Lefebvre, spokesman for the department," told reporters.

The most polluted outdoor pools were in the Montreal suburbs of LaSalle, Lachine and Pierrefonds-Roxboro, the study said.

The best pool was the Pius XII swimming pool in the borough of Saint-Léonard.
